During this summer, Galerie Michael Werner, Märkisch Wilmersdorf presents recent ‚Over Paintings’ by Danish Artist Per Kirkeby.
Per Kirkeby, one of the most respected artists of his generation, works in a variety of media such as visual arts, architecture and writing. Back in the mid 1960s he started experimenting with Over Paintings on different material which led to Over Paintings becoming a constant in his creative work. The latest works, created between 2007 and 2013, are now shown in this exhibition and refer to this tradition in a modern way.
The characteristics of Kirkeby’s distinctive approach to painting, that reminds the viewer of geological landscapes and sediments, are also revealed in the manner he creates Over Paintings. He deals with the original subject and enhances it by applying his own thoughts in layers of paint and not by aggressively covering the original subject.
So the viewer is invited to go on an adventurous journey where curiosity meets the elusiveness of abstract color and paintings.
