Press release
From November 12, 1993 to January 14, 1994, the Michael Werner Gallery will be showing new paintings and drawings by Markus Lüpertz entitled "Men without Women - Parsifal." The works shown come from a very extensive series created over the last six months.
At the center of each picture is a head, which certainly shows traits of a self-portrait. The structure of the picture is based on a grid of lines. The characteristic basic features of the face are insisted upon by means of the bone motif of abstract compositions that appear again and again in Lüpertz's work and whose richness of variation is surprising.
The title of this series of works refers to the literary tradition of the courtly novel and its musical realization by Richard Wagner. The connection between artistic aspiration and its realization in painting, with all its existential questions, is thematized.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog with a text by Wolfgang Kersten. The opening will take place on November 12 from 18:00 to 22:00. (Gallery opening hours: Tuesdays to Fridays 10.00 - 13.00 and 14.30 to 18.30, Saturdays 10.00 to 14.00, Mondays closed).
