Press release
Born in the early seventies in Osaka, contemporary Japanese artist Zon Ito is both a child of his time as well as of his environment. His later studies brought him to Kyoto where he first developed his characteristic style of sewing: the artist stitches diversely coloured thread through fabric, gradually revealing an interlaced system of motifs as the fibres weave together.
In this exhibition, Galerie Michael Werner will present seven of these embroideries. Sketchy landscapes or depictions of animals appear on coloured and naturally-toned fabric. Easily one could be tempted to speak of drawings and sign language, however, with his sewing technique, Ito creates an enchanting, spellbinding pictorial language of his own.
Zon Ito was born in 1971 in Osaka, Japan and currently lives and works in Kyoto. His work is presented in many major Japanese museums and has been presented in Europe since the turn of the twenty-first century.
The exhibition at Galerie Michael Werner in Märkisch Wilmersdorf opens 12 September 2016 and remains on view through 4 November 2016. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10am to 5pm. Booking in advance is recommended by phone +49 (0)33731 32010 or email galeriewerner@michaelwerner.de.
