“On first encounter, the proliferating sprawl of Francis Picabia’s life and work seems chaotic and suspiciously frivolous. Then, gradually, you begin to realize what a comprehensive chaos of idiom and incident Picabia left in his wake; you begin to understand that, over the length of his career, he, quite literally, left no stone unturned, no rule unbroken, no boundary un-breached and, no “style” un-challenged.” (Dave Hickey)

In this exhibition, Galerie Michael Werner will present nearly thirty drawings by Francis Picabia (1879-1953) which exemplify the variety of his graphic art: early landscapes, classical portraits and animal studies, as well as examples of the well-known “Transparences” and “Espagnoles” will be on view. A particular highlight is a rare “dot” drawing on paper.

Francis Picabia’s work is presented in every major museum worldwide and he is regarded as one of the most important and influential artists of classic modern art. A retrospective of his work is currently on view in the Museum of Modern Art in New York through 19 March 2017.

The exhibition at Galerie Michael Werner in Märkisch Wilmersdorf opens 9 January 2017 and remains on view through 24 February 2017. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10am to 5pm. Booking in advance is recommended by phone +49 (0)33731 32010 or email galeriewerner@michaelwerner.de.
