Galerie Michael Werner is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by the French artist Jean Fautrier (Paris, 1898 – Châtenay-Malabry, 1964) at Schloss Märkisch Wilmersdorf.

Jean Fautrier became famous as one of the most important artist of Informel with his series „Otages“ (1943-45). At Schloss Märkisch Wilmersdorf the early work of the artist is shown, which, as André Verdet wrote, „already had the visionary force and the innovative technique of the Fautrier from 1943“. Included are still lifes and nudes from the “black series“ of the 20s and 30s: expressive reddish-brown delineations of female nudes in front of white and dark gray backgrounds, as well as blackish-violet flower and animal still lifes. Fautrier’s late work is also represented: a painting in pale coloring with the typical coarse relief made of thickly applied, scratched paint.

The exhibition can be viewed from May 2nd until July 29th 2011 by appointment only.
