Press release
Galerie Michael Werner, Märkisch Wilmersdorf is pleased to announce its first exhibition of paintings by Swiss artist Raphael Egil.
Peintures collects Egil’s work from the last sixteen years, including many small paintings which reflect the artist’s Swiss homeland, such as “Stanserhorn” from 2009. But repeated excursions into the abstract can also be found in his work: for example, “Mann am Wasserfal” (2010) depicts a representational sketch dominated by an abstract structure which overlays the entire painting. In “Haus im Wald (Kamikochi)” (2013), abstract lines take shape to provide a compositional coherence to the work’s form and content.
Egil, still unknown in this country, embodies a certain kind of restlessness, an immense overpressure and a constant sense of searching. It is this searching which makes his oeuvre so exciting and unpredictable.
Raphael Egil (born 29 August 1975 in Wil, St. Gallen, as Raphael Egli) lives and works in Luzern where he also studied until 2000. His work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Switzerland. A parallel exhibition of paintings will be held simultaneously at Michael Werner Kunsthandel, Cologne. Both exhibitions are accompanied by a catalogue.
The exhibition opens at Galerie Michael Werner in Märkisch Wilmersdorf 11 September 2018 and remains on view through 27 October 2018. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10am to 5pm. Booking in advance is recommended by phone +49 (0)33731 32010 or email galeriewerner@michaelwerner.de.
